So this week I hit a milestone, I'm 24 weeks. Which now is when the baby has a fighting chance of surviving out of the womb. Don't get me wrong I want our little Bam Bam to cook a bit more get some fat on his little body but this really does make me breathe a sigh of relief. I'm also coming pretty close to my 3rd trimester, it seems like its going pretty quickly. I do find myself pretty freaking grumpy when I'm stuck in the heat, thats pretty much the symptom that is most apparent right now. I love feeling little Bam Bam moving and kicking and generally can't keep myself from talking to him when he does, which makes me look pretty "interesting" (read: crazy) when it happens in public. It is such a magical time, having this little boy inside of me growing and sharing everything with me. Its so hard to believe that pretty soon he'll be on his own and on the outside. I can't wait to get to know him, to see who he'll look like, to watch him grow.
I decided we're going to do some childbirth classes. I wasn't sure if I wanted to or not because I am so familiar with birth through my doula work but I figure the refresher is probably good and it will be good for the hubs to have a little more confidence going into it. We are using the Bradley Method because it emphasizes the husbands role as the coach and I've seen great success with clients who use it. It amazes me the difference it makes in labor when you are prepared rather than just "going for the ride". I'm going to do the best I can to prepare both me and the hubs for the events coming up.
I'm going to start researching cribs and deciding what we want. One of the girls from my birth board just posted pictures of her nursery and its soo cute so now I have the itch to get ours going. Right now its filled with so much baby stuff and furniture. I need to reorganize and get rid of some stuff then work on decorating. Conveniently this can be done in air conditioning so maybe that will help with the general grumpiness when its hot outside.

Exciting things
I've been working really hard on getting my doula business going. I have my website very close to launching, I'm just waiting on getting my new business cards and some promotional materials in hand. The website looks great if I do say so myself, Its definitely still a work in process. I am really excited for the La Leche League conference in New Jersey and finally getting to hear a woman with whom I hold a great respect for, Ina May Gaskin. This month I've picked up a few more clients so I'm really happy things seem to be moving with this as its such an amazing "job" to have.
I bet your in some crazy suspense waiting on that link to my website, but you'll just have to be patient.. Have a great day!

General Rambling
So I'm still here, there are a few things running around in my brain.
One of them is this store the clothes look so neat and she will make them according to your measurements. Serious clothes ogling going on by me.
The second thing running around in my brain is all the interest in Sarah Palin's daughter, seriously she's not running for VP. It is so annoying that any time in this election is taken to disect this poor 17 year old girl. I have heard so much about this that honestly I have no idea what her stance is on most issues. Well, I do know she's a babywearing mama so thats a positive anyway.
The third thing is the commercials for high fructose corn syrup. Seriously?!?! With a nation that struggles so much with obesity and its related problems why would anyone actually push the use of high fructose corn syrup.
All three of these things really deserve their own post so well thats something you can look forward too! In other news I had another birth I attended on Saturday as a doula, it was just beautiful! I'm such a sap I wonder if I will cry every time I act as a Doula because thats the trend so far.

My thoughts on the AMA and ACOG
Apparently the AMA and ACOG aren't too happy about The Business of Being Born; you know the movie that Ricki Lake put out about how birth is viewed in the US, and which also casts a positive light on home births. You know what I'm not so happy about, the Cesarean Rate in this country that is more than double what is recommended by the WHO.
According to a study by the CDC
"The cesarean delivery rate rose 4 percent in 2005 to 30.2 percent of all births, a record high for the nation. The cesarean rate has risen 46 percent since 1996."
So the U.S. has a C-section rate of above 30% while the WHO states that no region in the world is justified in having a cesarean rate greater than 10 to 15 percent.
Its amazing to me that the countries that honor birth as a natural occurrence in life have lower c-section rates and a lower maternal morbidity rate. You would think instead of attacking the idea that birth is not a medical condition the American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists would see that our country is lacking in this area and try to learn from those who are doing better. It angers me that many of my friends and family are recovering from surgery's that they didn't need to have because these institutions will not admit that we are below par in these areas.

As you can see from above, we're not the worst in the area of Maternal deaths but we're also not the best. Why not learn from countries that are doing better than we are in this area.
Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!!
By the way-I've scheduled posts that I've already written to be published both this week and next. I will not be checking up on everyone else's blogs or commenting till probably the beginning of July. So I didn't abandon you :)

New Venture
So I've been thinking this over for awhile and I have finally taken the step. I sent away for my certification material and my recommended reading from Dona to become a Birth Doula. I'm very excited about this and can't wait to get started and dig into this material! What an amazing thing to be a support to women in this time in their life!
A few friends of mine and I went to see "The Business of Being Born" the documentary by Ricky Lake and it was to say the least, eye opening. I think all women of child bearing age should watch this. Women in this country are being faulted by our medical community, they are sent to flounder in a system set up against them and their bodies without being given the tools and the knowledge they need. Scare tactics are being used against women for doctors convenience. Our country is one of the worst developed countries in the world as far as cesarean sections and also infant mortality (its in the bottom two); yet nothing is being done to change this and to reverse this trend. According to the World Health Organization only 10-15% of women are in need of a c-section, in the US our average is more than double and rising. I know personally that I'm just learning about my body and the actual process of birth. I had know idea the chemical and physical change that your body undergoes in labor, its AMAZING how it all works together.
Well enough of this rant, I'm sure there will be more in the future.
I'm very curious of my mom readers, can you tell me your birth stories and how you felt about the whole process in general? Oh yeah, and if you live in NJ; want to have me at your birth? :) I'll bring you ice chips and cheer you on!
