Interesting

The most common response I get when I say we're trying to go organic to decrease the chemical exposure is that, hey we grew up with it and we're ok. While I think its true that we did grow up with some harmful chemicals that are now regulated they definitely substituted those with some other chemicals which are just as harmful. Also the chemicals we have now are in EVERYTHING and seen as a benifit (ie the item being flame retardent, scotchguarded, etc). Mama K sent me an article and it had this statement in it and it really struck me.
"'We are in an epidemic of environmentally mediated disease among American children today... Rates of asthma, childhood cancers, birth defects and development disorders have exponentially increased, and it can't be explained by changes in the human genome. So what has changed? All the chemicals we're being exposed to.' says Dr. Leo Trasande, assistant director of the Center for Children's Health and the environment at Mount Sinai Medical Center," notes the CNN article.

So I'm just going to say you don't need to agree with me or do things like me but you need to research things on your own and determine what is "safe" for your family.

I totally read that article. Scary stuff. And people laugh when I say I use organic hairspray and buy organic bath towels.

Rock on Chica! :)

I am all about informed consent. Just know the risks involved before you make a purchase that's all. You gotta buy stuff or decide what to eat, so why not try to make the best choices you can at least most of the time?

I also think it is important to note that we don't need to be paranoid about everything because let's face it, we cannot iradicate all environmental toxins. I feel like if I at least make an effort at home I can greatly reduce my family's overall exposure.

Another thing to keep in mind, is how important it is to keep our bodies healthy so that we can properly deal with and process the toxins that we do come into contact with. Our body needs certain vitamins and nutrients to keep our immune system working. We need to maintain a healthy weight and get appropriate exercise in order to prevent undue stress on our organs and systems. (Not that I don't struggle with this myself. I know that we all do.) But a healthy body is our best defense against the bad stuff we can't avoid.

Anyway, it's just a part of an overall picture of wellness and health. The more I learn, the more I change my lifestyle. (Much to my husband's chagrin. hehe)
