Yeah we're thinking about it. Thats right taking the plunge and getting rid of our cable and possibly our tv. Its just a thought right now but one we're giving serious attention.
Our current contract is up on Jan 14th and as it looks now we'll be getting rid of the cable. I found a high speed internet and phone bundle thats $55 a month, currently we're paying $125 for our Phone, Internet and Cable (plus a DVR). So just by cutting the cable we'd be able to put $70 more a month towards our mortgage which adds up to a whopping $840 for the year. We do have our laptops so we'd be able to catch some shows on Hulu and we do have Netflix (for now) so I don't think it would hurt too badly. The main thing would be that the hubs wouldn't be able to watch sports.
As far as the tv, we have one of the flat screen wall mount jobs and I think its just too much for us. If we don't have high definition channels I don't think its worth it to have the tv either. If we sell it now I think we'd be able to get a good amount of money for it to also put on the mortgage. I have a very romantic idea of not having a tv in the house and how much I would get done in a day. I have crazy notions about a good amount of things though so we'll see if it comes to fruition or not. The hubs is still on the fence so I guess I'll let you know what we decide. We're going to have to figure it out soon!
Anybody gone and rid your house of the tv? cable? What are your thoughts

We won't be getting rid of the tv as hubby enjoys his sports. Plus, my daughter really enjoys her animal planet, discovery, and national geographic. lol! I mainly just watch movies with my crew.

I'll admit I do have have the same romantic notion of a tv-free home BUT I don't really think it will happen. Once we cut cable in the spring it will be used on a limited basis anyway. I don't watch a ton during the day so I know it's not hindering my productivity... unlike my computer. ahem. Gotta work on that.
I would LOVE to get rid of our tv! And I don't think I would miss it. Now, Chris, on the other hand... We have the basic package with our cable, and that's only like $17/mo. Like mama k said, the internet is my problem, not the tv. I just don't think, practically speaking, we could get rid of the internet... sigh.
We also play around with the idea of getting rid of our TV from time to time, but when we really think about it, we do watch some worthwhile stuff: TBN, the Food Network, NatGeo, Discovery, HGTV, DIY, Fine Living... it's all stuff from which we can learn and improve our lives. Rarely do we give in to the guilty pleasures, but when we do, it's worth it - I mean, I can't imagine not being able to watch The Office. I know we could watch it online, but our computers are very old and slow, and that would just be more frustrating than enjoyable. I think eventually paring down to just ONE television in the house is the goal now.
I'm not getting rid of my TV but I have not had cable in 8 years, its really no big deal. I probably watch as much TV as other people (which is shameful) I say go for it with ditching cable. I think the cost is just too much and always tell myself there are better things to do besides watch TV ( like visiting my good buddy Dirky!!).
I think w/Hulu and Netflix I could live without TV. I would miss watching with my hubby since neither of us have computer screens meant for group viewing but we could still watch movies. I would miss Sunday football.
